Teachers Union Locks Out Its Staffers Following 3-Day Strike
According to this report, the largest union in the country, the National Education Association (NEA), has locked its own workers out of their jobs after they went on strike for three days during the NEA Representative Assembly’s annual convention (July 4-7, 2024) in Philadelphia. The report indicates that staff at the NEA said they were told not to report to work at the union’s headquarters in Washington on Monday, July 8.
During the convention, NEA posted the following message on its website:
“Attention NEA RA Delegates: Please be informed that NEASO, one of the NEA staff bargaining units, initiated a strike for the duration of the NEA Representative Assembly. Once again, NEA has requested that NEASO join NEA and request assistance from a mediator from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. NEASO has declined. NEA will respect our staff’s strike line. Additional information will be sent via e-mail.”
The NEA represents 3 million teachers, support staff employees and other workers at public schools and colleges across the country. According to the report, Robin McLean, the staff union’s president commented, “I cannot imagine it lands well that the nation’s largest union is locking out its staff union.” Read the report for more details.
