Olathe Library proposes cuts in next year’s budget
Two Kansas public library systems face cuts to staff, hours and proposed spending levels. reductions and steep budget cuts.
Last month, the Olathe Library board approved a cut in spending for next year of more than $250,000. The Johnson County Library Board has proposed $1.4 million in budget cuts for next year.
Both Olathe and Johnson County libraries are proposing to reduce staff. Library Director Emily Baker said Olathe would offer incentive packages for voluntary separation as well as employee retirement. She did not rule out the possibility of layoffs. The library has 28 full-time and 72 part-time employees.
Total salaries, for example, would drop by almost $225,000 under the proposed budget. In addition, the full-time staff will be asked to take an unpaid, one week furlough next year.
