Consider Taking a Course This Summer

Summer is finally here. It’s a time to relax and take things at a slower pace (when possible).  We often try to spend time doing fun activities with family and friends. It might also be a good time to think about taking an online course for self-improvement. Listed below are several courses that will be offered this summer by the American Library Association’s (ALA) Office for Human Resource Development and Recruitment (HRDR). All courses are online, asynchronous sessions with a duration of six (6) weeks. If you plan to take a vacation during this time, you won’t have to worry about missing any information. Lectures are recorded and archived and made available during each week of the course.

Budget & Finance; Begins July 24, 2023; Register
Participants will learn how to:

  • Develop programming and capital budgets;
  • Prepare and monitor operational budgets.
  • Conduct cost/benefit analyses;
  • Understand the role of the library trustee in the budgeting process;
  • Identify and describe different funding models among district / political unit (municipal or county) / private (“association”); 
  • Understand financial statements and basic internal and external audits;
  • Understand your institution’s financial policies and procedures and work collaboratively with accounting personnel.


Serving Diverse Communities; Begins July 31, 2023; Register
Participants will learn how to:

  • Understand the demographic trends of the community served;
  • Assesses the degree to which services and programs meet the diverse needs of current and future populations;
  • Develop a plan to enhance access to library services, programs, library spaces, collections and technologies by diverse populations;
  • Develop a plan to market library services to diverse members of the community;
  • Develop a plan to enhance staff and board diversity;
  • Evaluate how well the library is meeting the needs of diverse populations.


Library Marketing; Begins August 14, 2023; Register
Participants will learn how to oversee the development of an effective marketing plan by:

  • Reviewing community analysis
  • Determining goals for marketing plan
  • Determining targeted audiences
  • Determining budget range
  • Determining communication conduits
  • Determining expertise needed (in-house and/or consultant)


Planning & Mgmt of Library Buildings; Begins August 14, 2023; Register
Participants will learn how to:

  • Determine the current and future functionality of a facility
  • Determine the capital investment needs of a facility (replacement, remodeling, refurbishing, or expansion)
  • Determines the ongoing maintenance requirements of a facility
  • Develop operating and capital budgets
  • Determine the feasibility and possible advantages of developing a joint-use facility


Fundraising/Grantsmanship; Begins August 21, 2023; Register
Participants will learn how to:

  • Identify funding needs of the library operations
  • Identify fundraising opportunities
  • Formulate compelling reasons/stories for seeking external funds
  • Understand donor relations
  • Initiate, collaborate with others, and complete grant applications
