Library facing budget shortfall:

Trustees weigh options, including Sunday closings

A $93,286 budget shortfall this year may lead Passaic County Library System trustees to ask staff to take furlough.

Though library director Jody Treadway hopes to close the shortfall by closing on Sundays or by taking money out of other line items, trustees suggested that they initiate union negotiations about unpaid leave for PALS staff.

The trustees have yet to make a decision. In the meantime, Treadway plans to request a rent reduction on the $30,000 the library pays to the school district for one of the PALS branches.

Several cuts have already taken place, including eliminating a security guard position and several substitutes for sick or vacationing workers.
