Course Schedule: January 27-March 3, 2009. Online synchronous sessions Tuesdays from 2:00-4:00 PM.

Course Structure/Delivery:

    Online via a combination of live, synchronous sessions and asynchronous discussion boards. Students will meet online weekly for 2 hours on Tuesdays from 2:00 – 4:00 pm central time. Discussion boards may be accessed at any time during the course.

    To familiarize the student with the basic principles of library personnel management and organization, including personnel administration within the context of the mission and goals of the organization. Topics included are recruitment of staff, making hiring decisions, supervision of staff, evaluation of staff's performance, identification of training needs, implementation of training, firing or terminiating staff, evaluating the effectiveness of the organizational structure with regard to personnel management, evaluating personnel policies and identifying and securing resources for staff. Upon completion of the course the candidate is expected to be able to write effective personnel policies, list the key legal issues involved in hiring and managing resolution skkills, and write a staff development and training plan that includes the introduction of technology.

    Technology Requirements:

    Reliable Internet connection higher than 28.8; Java-enabled Web browser; Real Player software; Adobe Reader; IBM Compatible Pentium II or greater with at least 400 MHz with Windows 98/ME/20000/XP or Macintosh with OS8; 128 MB RAM; sound card with speakers and/or earphones; color monitor with at least 800x600 resolution

It is an opportunity to participate in a national certification program in a library specialty.

If you are already offering a course the meets the standard, approval provides you with an additional audience for your courses.

If you are already offering a course that meets the standard, you may receive approval for two previous years of offering the course, meaning your students will qualify for completion of one standard even before they apply to become a CPLA candidate.
