Malia from a school library in Jefferson City, MO is a Star because Malia is one of my thirty, 5th grade Library LifeSavers this year.  Each student is assigned one day to come in to volunteer in our elementary library media center.  Malia goes over and beyond and comes in several times a week, giving up her lunch recess and afternoon recess.  Today she came in and brought in a friend who wanted to help.  They counted bookmarks for each class to be handed out next week for National Library Week.  The friend said she knew what to do because Malia had trained her.  That made me smile!  The tasks can be small, like counting bookmarks or large, like shelving books, but they just want to help and be recognized!  Thanks to Sarah for this nomination.

She was one of the forces behind the district deciding that each school needed its own certified LMS. Gabrielle was promoted last year to be the district Technology Integration Coordinator and took it upon herself to add Library Media Services Coordinator as well - the district has never had anyone at the coordinator level to speak out for the libraries! Great job, Gabrielle! Thanks to Nina for this nomination.

Cathy from an academic library in Cape Girardeau, MO, is a Star because Cathy is definitely a library star. There are many reasons for identifying her as such. For example, she trained me to catalog when I started working, has been the leader and head of Bibliographic Control for all these years, served as the Library director, assured the smooth transition to Innovative Millennium, has effectively served on various Library, University, and Senate committees throughout her tenure at the University, and has kept everyone in the department informed about cataloging, library, and University matters. There is no greater star than a person who works hard, provides leadership for those in the department, and teaches others the craft of cataloging. Though she is not in the public eye, being in Bibliographic Control, her work has guaranteed that the Library functions smoothly and provides access to the collections. She is consistently patient with any request and demonstrates this by taking time and care to answer questions thoroughly.  Students are visibly disappointed or concerned if she is not at work and will often prefer to "Wait until Gaye returns," for assistance.  Trust in a competitive high stakes environment is important.  Students trust Gaye, she scolds them when they complain about exams and reminds them that they'll be saving lives one day and they listen to her.  Not only is she helpful with student but faculty and staff feel the same way. In the last week alone a student dropped in and said to Gaye, "You always tell me good luck tomorrow, you're going to fine, and it works, I always do well." The student smiled broadly and handed over a plate with jumbo shrimp and other delicacies to thank Gaye.  She's awesome and so deserving of being a library star!!! I have long considered Tonya a mentor and a role model for Latina young women everywhere, and I don't even think she knows it or would admit it. She always represents the library with such passion, even when she's not working. I believe she turned our library into a place where us Latinos and urban community members finally feel welcomed and many of my family and friends feel the same. When she came to work at the library, us Latinos noticed change! She started a campaign to make our community feel welcomed in the library with a new World Languages area that we use all the time, ESL classes that are always filled and that have wonderful teachers, a new literacy classroom and a library that now reflects the urban community. Tonya is a compassionate, empowered, genuine person, who's love for urban libraries is always apparent. She never changes who she is, whether she is working with the city administrators are just talking to us about the books we're reading. She recently created the Virtual Career Center for us to find jobs during these hard economic times and and let us know that the Virtual Career Center template will soon be made available as a template for all NJ Public Libraries on the New Jersey State Library website! Good for her and for our library. She is my mentor and I really hope she gets recognized because she works so hard and is such a strong leader for libraries! Outside of the library, she stands up for urban youth. Her dedication to the community is inspirational and she has run a nonprofit for our youth for over seven years, opening up her home 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to urban youth to prevent youth violence and to encourage youth to take responsiblity for their future. We're lucky to have her, and so is the city and our library. Thanks to Danielle for this nomination.

For those of us in gradutae library studies, Mr. Cicola is an alternate professor, walking encyclopedia, mentor, even a father figure whose wisdom has been a constant source of security. Mr. Cicola has rare intellectual and spiritual virtues, including charity toward the needy and a charming, affable nature. Mr. Cicola is the greatest and most effective advocate we have at City Hall, yet another institution he is slowly but surely transforming in our favor due to the widespread respect he enjoys from managers and councilmen alike. I think that I can say that one of the most important experiences of my life--and I have had many--has been the privilege, if not the grace, of working with Bill Cicola. Therefore, may I please request that you award Mr. Cicola as he deserves. This is truly a library director of genius and humanity. Thanks to Joseph for this nomination.

Her work doesn't stop when she leaves the library.  It's only beginning.  I really admire Elaine and all she does to bring sunshine into our others lives and sharing her love of reading with them.  Thanks so much Elaine!  Thanks to Nancy for this nomination.

Margaret from a public library in Smithfield, NC is a Star because she has given stellar performances at many of our Summer Reading Grand Finales including being the queen bee and wearing the royal crown, riding a donkey downtown, willingly being the target in a dunking booth, and coloring her hair purple in recognition of oustanding accomplishments of kids reading.  Margaret is our Library Director and we appreciate her support of the Summer Reading Program at our library.  Thanks to Nancy for this nomination.

Sara and Rose from a public library in Thomasville, NC is a Star because both of these ladies have tremendous energy and a great work ethic and carry more than their share of the library load.  You know the task at hand will be completed  properly and efficiently.  What great examples to follow!  Thanks to Anonymous for this nomination.

Margo from a public library in Kings Mountain, NC, is a Star because she always has a smile for everyone if she is working the front desk. She is the Program Director and really
has a variety of programs throughout the year. She polls the patrons about what would interest them and personally invites them to attend. She suggests books that she thinks would be of interest to the regular readers. You can tell she loves the library. Thanks to Sharon for this nomination.

Mari from a public library in Kings Mountain, NC, is a Star because she knows everything! I moved to Kings Mountain 2 yrs. ago and have been a regular patron of the Library at least twice a week. She has the answer to any question I have had and also the questions I have heard her being asked by others. She moves the front desk checkout quickly but with a friendly, positive attitude. She is also the person I ask for references to the dentist, hairdresser, etc. She has a good sense of humor which helps when you work with the public on a daily basis. She is just another reason that Mauney Memorial is such a great library. Thanks to Sharon for this nomination.

Anthony from a public library in Kings Mountain, NC, is a Star because he goes above and beyond the call of duty to help patrons and employees.
